Komen Greater PA stands with the Jewish community during this time and extends our condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of the senseless tragedy at the Tree of Life Synogogue in Squirrel Hill. Pittsburgh truly is #StrongerThanHate and rises above all acts of hatred and violence.

We are proud to say The National Council of Jewish Women, Pittsburgh, was the local founder and organizing sponsor of the Pittsburgh Race for the Cure for our first 13 years. We extend our love and thoughts to them.

 

Susan G. Komen announces $26M investment26 million investment

Susan G. Komen® recently announced an investment of $26 million to fund 62 new research projects with 70% funding metastatic breast cancer research.

This new funding is part of Komen's efforts to achieve its Bold Goal: to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths in the U.S. by 50 percent by 2026. The new investment brings Komen's total research fundings to $988 million to date – the largest nonprofit investment outside the U.S. government.

The grants include $1,998,557 in new funding for research at three institutions in Pennsylvania including the University of Pittsburgh, bringing Komen’s total research investment in Pennsylvania to $62,688,994 since 1982.

Komen Greater PA would like to announce the 2018 Pittsburgh Race for the Cure Pink Honor Roll – the top 25 individual fundraisers during the 26th Annual Race that was held on May 13, 2018. The Pink Honor Roll raised an outstanding $60,000; we thank you for your efforts and continued support!

On Wednesday, October 3, our Board of Director's annual Sabika Pink Party took place at Rivers Casino. Hundreds of people filled the room shopping Sabika's stunning jewelry display. 50% of the party’s sales were generously donated to Komen Greater PA along with 25% of each Pink Party Collection piece sold.

Paws for the Cure 2018Paws 2018_11.1.18

On Sunday, October 7, Komen Greater PA held its 10th Annual Paws for the Cure at Hartwood Acres. For the first time ever, this event had a USATF-certified 5K timed run. Family and pet friendly activities took place, including the doggie "apple" bobbing station, a 50-Yard Doggie Dash, as well as the ever-popular costume contests.

diamond.pngThis year, Paws for the Cure also held a "Pup for the Cure" model contest where dogs and their owners could get their pictures taken together at a photobooth. The photo with the most ‘likes’ on Facebook would be named our featured pup!

This year’s winner is Diamond! Diamond is a rescued Greyhound mix who is currently in training to be a therapy dog. Diamond also goes by the nicknames D and Pritz, and has three canine brothers, Jax, Spooky and Felix — not to mention one canine sister, Emma.

 

 

Tickled Pink Survivor/Thriver Brunch at Rivers Casinotickled pink 2018

On Sunday, October 21, over 300 breast cancer survivors and their guests filled the Rivers Casino ballroom for Komen Greater PA’s Tickled Pink Survivor/Thriver brunch. Tickled Pink has been held annually for over 20 years and gives survivors a chance to connect and celebrate survivorship. This year, survivors and their guests enjoyed a delicious brunch, boutique shopping, and a purse party! 

Guest speaker, Jason W. Brown, MD, a Hematologist-Oncologist and the Medical Oncology Director at Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute, spoke and explained advancements in precision medicine – particularly the TAILORx study and adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer patients.

At Susan G. Komen Greater PA, individuals often call our offices for support in receiving a mammogram. Our Affiliate funds several programs throughout our 53 county service area for mammograms including: 

  • Screening and co-pay support for Monroe and Pike Counties at the Hughes Cancer Center of Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono in East Stroudsburg, PA.
  • The Comprehensive Health and Breast Screening Program run by Maternal and Fetal Health Services, Inc. focuses on uninsured women of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Northampton, Pike, Schuylkill, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Wyoming Counties (1-877-MAMMO-4-U)
  • Adagio Health provides the Mammogram Voucher Program for the 34 counties of Western and Central PA (1-888-687-0505)  

Screening mammography remains the best tool in detecting breast cancer early.  If you notice any change or abnormality in your breasts between screenings, take action and call your doctor. 

 

Susan G. Komen® Patient Treatment Fund

Did you know that Susan G. Komen has partnered with CancerCare® to offer financial assistance to breast cancer patients living in the United States? Grants are provided to assist with costs of oral pain and anti-nausea medication; oral chemotherapy/hormone therapy; child care/elder care, hospice and palliative and home care; lymphedema care and supplies; transportation to and from treatment; wigs and prosthesis; as well as durable medical equipment.
